Spectators: A guide to the Classic

The increase in sightseeing boats and a sport not well-suited for spectators are colliding more and more these days as the Classic's popularity continues to soar. It is a predictable growing pain for a burgeoning sport still striving to find its ultimate public forum.

Boating spectators present a problem not found in any other professional sport. Watching the fishing action "up close and personal" can actually have an impact on who wins the Classic because this pressure can affect both the fish and the fishermen.

It is a gesture of affection that the pros genuinely appreciate, but it sometimes affects bass behavior and often impacts their ability to perform with maximum efficiency.

By their very presence, the sheer number of spectator boats can cause problems. But the acts of a few individual spectators can influence the outcome of the Classic. The most common problems that the Classic pros report include:

Spectators fishing the same spot after the pro leaves.
Talking loudly to the pro and other spectators.
 Careless boat wakes.
Purposely fishing the water around the pro.
Noise from depthfinders and trolling motors that can drive baitfish deep and actually spook bass.
Attempting to duplicate the pro's pattern in the next cove or point (where he may be planning to fish later in the day).

In order to provide an even playing field and an exciting event, BASS asks that all Classic attendees who plan on being "on the water" avoid these types of mistakes.
