2 August, Tuesday

An unpleasant family of toads. A slimy water rat. A muddled old mole. This trio of villains does not make life easy for the heroine in Tiny Thumbelina. Step inside her ever-so-small world in the latest stage production adapted from the story by Hans Christian Andersen at the Creative Arts Theatre & School in Arlington. 3 August, Wednesday

This is the last month for children to enjoy the Summer Storytime Tours at the Amon Carter Museum. Children can discover a whole new world through moving words and vibrant pictures. The program presents picture books and captivating stories inspired by the museum's fabulous collections. The books are read in the galleries. See MUSEUMS.

4 August, Thursday

Lace up those inline skates and get ready to take your game to the street. The Fort Worth Brahmas are about to wrap up their popular Blacktop Brahmas Summer Tour, a series of free inline hockey clinics. But there's still time to get some great tips from Brahmas players and coaches. Today the tour stops from 10 a.m. to noon at the Martin Boys and Girls Club in Fort Worth. Participants learn basic hockey skills, including skating, passing, shooting and offensive and defensive strategy. See EVENTS.

5 August, Friday

Enjoy an afternoon at the theater with your family as you sit back and delight in the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf. Peter and his friends learn about friendship and courage in this musical celebration, presented by the Pushcart Players, an award-winning theater and arts-in-education company. The show will be performed at the Irving Arts Center. See THEATER.

6 August, Saturday

Ahoy, mateys! The Wiggles have shipped out on their latest live concert tour, and they're ready to dock right here in North Texas. The Wiggles Live! Sailing Around the World features the world's No. 1 preschool band and their many friends, including Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur and Wags the Dog. 7 August, Sunday

Today is National Kids Day -- a celebration launched nationwide in 2001 to bring families together. Embrace your loved ones at a free community event honoring kids. The River Legacy Foundation is hosting the celebration, featuring indoor and outdoor activities, the Dallas Disc Dogs and a fishing clinic. Attendees can enjoy free snow cones, watermelon and popcorn. Join in the fun at the Living Science Center in Arlington. See EVENTS.

9 August, Tuesday

It's time to raise the curtain on The Muppet Show! Get ready for big-time fun with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and more with the special-edition release of The Muppet Show -- Season One on DVD. The set includes all 24 episodes, completely restored and remastered, from the inaugural 1976 season of the variety show, plus two never-before-seen episodes. You'll also get creator Jim Henson's original pitch of the show, a gag reel and plenty of other memorable Muppet morsels.

12 August, Friday

Gotta dance! If that's the mood you're in, you'll definitely want to check out a performance of the rousing musical Singin' in the Rain. The stage show is loaded with exciting tap numbers, heartwarming moments and maybe, just maybe, some real live rain. You'll be humming the tunes the whole way home. So, come out and soak up all the wet-and-wild fun when the show opens today at the Artisan Center Theater in Hurst. See THEATER.

13 August, Saturday

More than 1,000 pounds of hand-blown glass art will be showcased this weekend at the Euless Public Library. The "Blooms of Enlightenment" display was made to evoke images of growing floral elements. The blooms take about two hours and require as many as four people working together as a team to create. The 68 roundels weigh about 10 to 20 pounds each and were created by David Keens and students in the UTA Art Department. See EVENTS.

14 August, Sunday

Ever wonder what kind of animals visit your garden at night? Join in the mystery with the "Backyard Wildlife Festival" at the Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park. Kids can find clues and play a detective game to learn about the nightlife creatures. Also, learn humane, effective solutions to wildlife problems, such as squirrels in attics, raccoons in chimneys and more. See ANIMALS AND NATURE.

16 August, Tuesday

Teen popster Hilary Duff is a busy girl. She's headlining a big-time concert tour. She's filming the sequel to the film Cheaper by the Dozen with Steve Martin. She's co-hosting tonight's Teen Choice Awards. Quite the busy-bee life, indeed. Well, at least she's made time for her music fans, whom she greets today with her newest CD, Most Wanted. The album features the hit single, Wake Up, which also can be heard in the commercials for Candies, for which Duff also is the spokeswoman. Whew! Somebody give this girl a nap.

20 August, Saturday

Bicycle safety is so important, especially when it comes to kids. As children across North Texas head back to school -- many on two wheels -- be sure to make time for a valuable event that could help prevent bike injuries. The 2nd Annual Bicycle Rodeo, hosted by the city of Euless, will teach kids about road safety, helmet protection and more. Children can ride along a specially constructed safety course with an officer from the Euless Police Department. The free event also features bounce houses, face painters and $1 train rides. 23 August, Tuesday

It's a show so popular it spawned a reality-show knockoff. It's The O.C. and it's available for your home viewing pleasure 24/7. The O.C. -- The Complete Second Season is scheduled to arrive in stores today in all its DVD glory. The great thing about this show is that while the teens are the primary players, the parents are just as vital, exchanging witty one-liners with the best of the younger set. The seven-disc set includes all 24 episodes and a disc full of bonus material.

24 August, Wednesday

Catch a lively performance of the award-winning Hello, Dolly! starring film, Broadway and television star Michele Lee, who is perhaps best known for her work on the nighttime soap Knots Landing. The show, featuring the classic hits, Put on Your Sunday Clothes and Before the Parade Passes By, won 10 Tony Awards, including best musical. The show, presented by Casa Maņana Theatre, is at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth.

25 August, Thursday

Travel to the African plains for a wild animal adventure. Illustrator Jan Brett's latest children's book, Honey...Honey...Lion! follows the escapades of a honeyguide bird and an African honey badger. For years, the friends shared the sweetness of honey. But now the badger has become greedy, and the bird has decided to teach him a lesson. A lift-the-flap page reveals the twist. Brett's most recent book, The Umbrella, was a New York Times bestseller.

27 August, Saturday

Just in time for back-to-school season, it's the second annual "Keepin' It Real" Youth Empowerment Summit. The goal of the event is to provide kids ages 12 to 19 from across North Texas the information that will help them be successful students and responsible citizens. The youth summit is free and designed to provide teens with real-life solutions to problems they may face as they prepare to return to school. You must pre-register by Aug. 19. The summit, presented by Teen Graffiti magazine, Teens Reaching Teens Inc. and the Lakewest Family YMCA, will be held at Lakewest Family YMCA in Dallas. See EVENTS.
