By Matt Williams - 27.Jul.2005
The winding stretch of Mississippi River out of Onalaska, Wis., is a
dynamic bass fishery that offers a bounty of opportunities to suit just
about any fishing style. According to Wal-Mart FLW Tour pro Tom Monsoor
of LaCrosse, Wis., a bass angler who can't find something he or she
likes in pools 7, 8 or 9 probably won"t find it anywhere.
Monsoor expects the fish to be schooled up and in a chasing mode
when the EverStart Series event rolls into town Aug. 3-6. Anglers could
easily catch 20 to 30 fish out of individual locations.
Key patterns: Several will work. Crankbaits and Carolina rigs
worked around wing dams will produce limits, as will topwater rats
fished in pads and slop grass. Monsoor predicts the heavier bags will
come by swimming a ¼-ounce jig around shoreline weedbeds.
It is worth noting that the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources has lifted the "no cull” rule for the EverStart Series event.
Monsoor’s call: 27 to 28 pounds to make the cut; 30 pounds to win.
